Approaches to IT architecture to support the goals of portable EHRs have been discussed throughout the healthcare industry.


The two main high-level architectural models — federated and centralized — are in development or already implemented in various configurations around the world. However, the U.S. healthcare industry faces unique constraints on how information can be organized and shared, which will shape the particular features of either model.
