The pursuit of clinical decision support shifts the focus of the EHR discussion from technology to the consistent delivery of clinical knowledge at the point of care.

An example of this would be a CDS as a decision assistant that runs in the background and incorporates human nature and behavior. Dr. Howard Landa divides CDS into active and passive applications. Active CDS interrupts work flow using applications such as popup alerts, hard stops that require completed fields within orders, and pager messages sent for panic lab values.
