Welcome to Healthcare Technology Volume 4. We are proud to publish the thoughts and solutions of the
world’s foremost healthcare technologists. I’d like to thank the members of the editorial advisory board, our
authors and the Health & Life Sciences team at Accenture for their efforts in bringing Healthcare
Technology to fruition.
In the first three volumes of Healthcare Technology there was great speculation – as well as tremendous
hope – of widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) and an interoperable network through
which to communicate those records. The ultimate goal was, of course, safer and higher-quality patient
care. Just as our authors anticipated, universal adoption of these key technologies is becoming a reality,
and the dream of an interoperable healthcare network, spun from the EHRs generated by our healthcare
providers, may soon exist during our waking hours as well.
This latest edition focuses on the migration toward personalized healthcare and the ways in which technology
enables that transition. The white papers, interviews, case studies and solution providers in this year’s
volume examine the role that EHRs will play as we move toward a seamless, longitudinal health network,
as well as obstacles to growth, legislative issues and clinical excellence.
In addition to celebrating progress and accomplishments in healthcare IT, the authors in this edition realistically
assess ongoing pitfalls, lagging adopters, failed technologies, as well as some pleasant surprises
discovered along the way.
Please remember to visit us on the Web. In addition to this printed edition, an electronic version of the
project can be found at www.HCTProject.com. Visit often as we regularly update works contained in this
book and publish content not available at press time.
Please contact us with your feedback or to discuss participating in future editions. We hope that the information
presented in Healthcare Technology will contribute to better, safer healthcare.
